    FYI, my husband and I have been foster parents for 15 years for newborns and younger kids and sometimes for their birth moms, and  we’ve cared for 26 precious children!  (One or two at a time ha ha.)  Our 26th child is the first one to become available for adoption to us, and we are thrilled that we adopted him on National Adoption Day November 2012.  These children are the delight of our lives.  Thanks for helping us see things from their perspective.

    Now for the test!  I’m chewing on my virtual pencil.  Have fun “grading” these.

I noticed everyone is having trouble remembering the kind of candy for #8 and I can’t remember either but I remember when you bought all that Easter candy. I thought you would be so sick.     You bet I would, LT. I’ve been missing your posts and wondering how you’re doing and I don’t know how to explain it, but I just had a peace about it…that you were really doing well. I was happy for you.

    Wanted to tell you that just after Thanksgiving….shortly after you clicked the pause button on your blog, I heard through an acquaintance (who is a drug counselor through a family agency) that there was this young man who had just recently aged out of the foster system and had no place to go. Had been couch surfing for a few months.

    On December 7th, we moved him into our house. Have been taking him job hunting (interview yesterday, another today!) and to get his driving permit, and a copy of his Social Security card and Birth Certificate and training for his GED. All this guy needed was somebody in his corner, and if it weren’t for your passion and vision igniting something inside me, I don’t know where this kid would be right now. So….thanks, LT! Just wanted to let you know about that now while I had the chance.

    You’re awesome. And you’ve shown me how to be a little awesome, too. Thanks!

    Yes because I have truly missed you LT. I have adopted three children through the system and have wanted to email you so many times. Alot of times you have helped me see things though HER perspective. I would fly anywhere and pay anything just to be able to spend a day with you and have you answer all of my questions about RAD and how to make things better. So of course I would totally give an email to read your blog if you do it again. I look forward to reading about you and all of you experiences and I think alot of us do!

    Hello LT
    Let’s see!

    This is a beautiful young lady that enjoys Cheetos, Ice Cream and fast food. Her best friend KC works with her at a sandwich shop.

    LT was hit by a car while riding her bicycle. Her bicycle was totaled and she had multiple injuries including a broken wrist that was splinted for a long time. She recuperated in her apartment sitting in her favorite spot by the window surrounded by her loving fur pets.

    Dr Val has been a wonderful therapist for LT even though she doesn’t partake of the treats LT wants to share with her.
    Dr Val believes LT has PTSD and a few other things.

    Another challenge (in my opinion) is her BIG heart and wanting to please others. Sometimes people are cruel to LT because they are nasty people that like to belittle others because of their own shortcomings.

    LT has helped others just by sharing so much of her life. Her blog, “I Was a Foster Kid” is full of wonderful educational information for foster parents, caseworkers and foster children.

    LT is spunky, funny, smart and caring.
    She is loved by many people who admire this young woman.

I was searching the web for advice on how to get prepared for foster children coming into our home, and I discovered your blog. It has helped me SO MUCH in just a few short days. However, I would definitely sign up for a private blog because as a CASA, even the few blog posts I managed to read were so helpful in increasing my understanding of what my youth might be going through, or might go through once she is out on her on and still has to process how her childhood was spent.     Most of the questions have been answered but I think the one folks are getting wrong is about why your apartment is cool. I’ve always liked the idea of the window but I think you totally grooved on the green counters in the kitchen right? And I think it is the peanut butter cups you have a hard time practicing moderation with but when I saw ‘what kind of candy’ I thought- ALL CANDY! ;)

    Yes I would likely sign up for your blog with some sort of verification depending on what exactly it was. It would be cool if there was a way for you to have the good of your blog without all of the negatives.

    I would definitely sign up if you had a private blog! I’d be afraid I wouldn’t make the cut because I’ve only commented a few times though. Since you may not really “know” me (obviously how well do you know your commenters, some have proven to be not so great when you thought they were) you may be uncomfortable letting me see your writing. Which I definitely understand, but selfishly I just feel kinda invested in your story and want to keep reading. But whatever is best for you is what you should do. As much as I missed reading your blog during the hiatus you took my life went on and it would continue to do so even if I wasn’t put on the guest list if you made your blog private. But I hope I would be able to keep seeing your story and watching you grow and hearing about your challenges :)

Just to get more specific to show I am not just claiming I’m a reader :) the dessert you took to KC’s house was snowmen shaped ice cream! And for her birthday (?) you gave her a T-shirt that says I can’t dance, and the first time you gave her a present you bought a ball the term for which I don’t remember (I am not a native English speaker) but I looked it up and if I recall correctly, it is made of cloth?     Love your quiz, but I don’t have time to answer because I’ve got kiddos who need help with their homework. This is a big year for us as we move two beautiful little ones out of the foster care system and into our family (they already have our hearts) forever. We got guardianship of a nine year old girl a couple of months ago (not up for adoption at this point; but we will if/when we can) and moving forward to adopt the other little one in a few months. This system is hard, but your posts continue to encourage me.

    Glad you are okay. Of course you can have a valid email address. I promise not to say anything mean, but I might suggest you take your vitamins once in a while. :)

    No time for all the qs but so you know I’m not a robot–your first foster mom was the nurse who took care of you and smiled and let you trace her mouth when she smiled because you weren’t used to seeing that. I think your next foster mom wanted you to stop coloring on the walls and once when you colored on the paper on the floor she stopped what she was doing to color with you. :)

    Yes, I’d be interested in following your private blog and I don’t mind giving you my last name – you already have my first name and e-mail from previous comments – but I’d prefer that my full name not be used publicly. I hope that’s okay. I don’t know if you have considered this, but I believe it is possible to have some blog posts protected so that only people with a password can access them. You might be able to continue blogging here, but password protect those posts that are of a more personal nature. The ones that offer general advice for foster parents, you could make public, but close the comments so you don’t have to put up with the haters. Just a thought since it seems your blog is always attracting new readers who find your posts extremely helpful.

My thoughts are that some times the empathy that is found through hardship is an incredible gift that changes many lives for the better, although I would not wish any of the suffering on anyone especially the type you have experienced. My last name is brown so hopefully it’s not too common to tell I’m real. I have PTSD too. It’s really helpful for me to read your blog because I always get mad and think my life would be better if anyone ever called cps for me when i was a kid. It’s really helpful to have perspective.     I too just starting reading your blog. So I don’t know most of the questions you asked. I would love to be able to read your new private blog. I am a Mom of 7 kiddos. Three are bio and 4 are foster. They are two separate sibling groups. They are permanent, but can never be adopted. Unless they agree that we can adopt the when they turn 18. The are aboriginal and here in Canada they will never be adoptable while underage. We are their permanent foster home and they have all been with us since they were babies. Our oldest just turned 7. I love reading your blog. I get to see a glimpse of what a foster home should look like.

    2. I think it was a dance about food, or getting Harbor ANGRY. I can vaguely remember you mentioning it once…

    4. I think it was called a wrist jack – it was an external structure to stabilize your wrist – and it sucked!
    5. Your wrist was broken when a car hit you while you were on your bike.
    6. You spend 11 years in foster care – you aged out, never having had a permanent foster home, or even better, a forever home.
    7. Is the deck the coolest part of your apartment? I seem to remember something about your dogs being able to get the outside feel without going downstairs… I know you liked the ‘color scheme’ as well – like it kind of suited who you are, ya know? And I think the bathroom accesories (shower curtain towel) suit you too – you picked them out yourself, which was a huge thing.
    8. I think it peanut butter cups – because I remember that it was something I really favorite too – one of my go to fixes… But I have a few like that sooooooooooo. I remember a few instances of a little too much… There was the alcohol too…
    9. I think you mean the nurse, Liz? I remember how kind she was to you, but she was just a temporary placement – she took you home from the hospital.

I think somehow I got linked to your blog by reading another blog about a family that had already adopted a little boy & started the foster to adopt process.     I am so glad that you seem to be doing okay. I hope your holidays were good. We got to spend our first official Christmas as the parents of our two adopted daughters.

    I only started reading right before you stopped blogging. I only know some of the answers to your questions.

    I started reading your blog because my wife and I adopted sisters via foster care. You give such good insight into some of the things our children have gone though (taken from parents, multiple foster homes, separated from siblings). We are taking a break from fostering until our oldest son goes off to college in a couple years, but we want to start again after.

    Reading your blog keeps the feelings of hope, fear, love, injustice that define foster care fresh in my mind. It makes me want to stay involved and make a difference.

    I am a survivor of CSA by both parents for years. I was never in the foster care system as I didn’t speak up fully. However, my inner child sends thoughts of peace and comfort to yours. All that we can do is continue to work on holding them safely now and healing them.

    8) I got sick because I don’t know how to practice moderation with what candy? Resses peanut butter cups (I remember cause I can make myself sick on them too, lol!)

    9) Who was my first foster mom? Ms. Liz

    10) Dr. Val is my therapist. When I try to give her junk food, she tells me _____________? moderation

    11) What did I bring to my friend’s house for Thanksgiving dinner? Ice cream snowmen

    13) What is my job? I know you work in food service in some capacity.

    14) What are my mental health challenges? Be nice! Overcoming some of the worst trauma’s a kid can suffer-PTSD, DID, and I’m thinking Bi-Polar disorder, an eating disorder, and certainly clinical depression

    15) Why do I LOVE Wendy’s? Yum! You love them frostys!

    16) What is my physical feature that is always messy? Yer hair, lol!

    .….To read a private blog, you would need to provide a valid email and because I happen to get alot of hurtful attacking, two-face people reading my blog, a valid name…. would you sign up? Hell yes I would! You have it already, don’t you?

    I need to tell you something LT-I started a new treatment foster care provider pre-service training group last Saturday, and told them about you, the blog, and what had happened, and that I was so sad that you had to pull away. They were just shocked that people would do that to you, and all of them want the link to your old blog pages to read the stuff you left posted. I confessed to them about being concerned about how you were doing, and missing you, and how you had inspired me to go ahead an take a fulltime, older teen. I stayed home from work today cause Iworked Saturday, and was so excited to see that you are okay! In the group there is a woman who emancipated from the system-but had a much better experience than you did. There is also a couple where the man had worked in a boot camp style group home, and she has been a foster parent before. One is a librarian who has been, with her husband, a mentor for a teen girl in my agency’s residential program, and they want to be able to be her foster parents’ when she is released. I am so glad to be able to share your wisdom with them. And even if you don’t do a private blog, I will continue to be a staunch supporter, and keep your wisdom spreading, and keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Blessings coming your way, as always!

    I can’t answer all your questions because I haven’t been around for that long. But I’ll answer what I can. I did read some of your old posts, but my memory isn’t that good. Or maybe it is?

    1. Cheetos
    3. KC – and her parents help you manage the money you got from the accident.
    5. Accident-you don’t have to worry about money anymore
    6. 7 to 18. Your brother told the teacher what happened to you. Your Father was an awful man (don’t want to say what he did to you when you were just a babe) + your father stabbed you in your belly.
    9. Your first foster mom was a nurse. They placed you with her because of her medical knowledge. You liked her.
    10. moderation. I loved how Dr. Val gave you something to work on when she went on vacation. I thought that was adorable.

    13. Restaurant. You thought you were going to get fired but other workers told your boss what happened and that guy got fired.
    14. Dissociative disorder and PTSD ( I have that one too)

    You are passionate about changing foster care. You think every child should have a family. You were put into the hospital last year for sitting on a bridge with alcohol. You struggle with suicidal thoughts, but your love for your animals stops you. You had mono last year. KC came over and took care of you. When you were delirious you slipped up and told KC more about your life in foster care (you’ve never told her before). KC can’t dance. your father is a very bad man who violated you when you were 7 years old and then he stabbed you in the belly. Your brother told someone at his school. You remember the policemen coming to your house. You don’t remember them pushing your Father against the wall but you wish you did. There was urine and blood running down your legs. You’ve been told your mother was probably a prostitute. You felt bad for another foster girl because it was the first time she was raped and you had been through it before. Don’t ever put foster kids clothes in garbage bags when you are dumping them because it makes them feel like trash.

    You want a family. You want a mom. I can identify with that. My mom died when I was 7.

    When I read your writings KC I see a beautiful person. You are a person of great worth. While your story is tragic KC you are a person of great worth. As horrible as your life has been there is something about you KC that just shines through. I’ve posted this before but I think it aptly describes you:

    I’ve never commented before but I’ve been a reader for a couple of years. My husband and I are getting ready to adopt/foster kids (preferable over 10yo). And the information you’ve posted is invaluable. When talking to people about issues they are having with their kids who have come from traumatic pasts, I always try to imagine their side of the story as if from your perspective. I would love to continue reading about your healing process and life.

    I’d like to keep reading. I don’t know the answers to all the questions you asked as I’m kind of new to your blog. I have read most of your entries on tips for foster parents though…know that you aged out of the system after spending many years…that you wanted to be part of that hippie family who taught you to dance…that you used to keep old bananas stuffed away until a foster mom made the food box for you…that you wish Dr. Val would adopt you…you have either a dog or a cat named Moonlight??? (I didn’t quite catch that much yet.) In any case, I am sincere in wanting to read. We’re pondering the idea of adopting from the foster system and the information on your blog is incredible in terms of being a reality check and also helping us begin to understand what a child goes through in the system. Anyway, if you’ll have me, I’d love to read the private blog.

    My favourite dance of yours is the “Harbor hates that so quit it” song. I make up songs and dances for my dogs too. They respond better to musical numbers than simple words like “sit”.

    4) What device did I have to wear on my broken wrist?
    I forgot the name for this one. The time you got the wrist jack off was the first time I read your blog. Then I went back to the beginning because you’re such a good writer.

    You got hit riding your bike. I can’t really think of anything to say about it coz it sucked. Oh yeah,there is something. I was really impressed at how you managed your settlement money. Almost everyone who gets a big payout spends it too fast. I think you might be better at moderation than Dr Val!

    6) How many years did I spend in foster care?
    I know it was since you were about seven until you aged out. And somehow you managed to still learn how to be empathetic, and caring, funny and silly, and make a difference in the world even without a stable family to teach you. Because you’re so cool.

    7) What is the coolest part of my apartment?
    The bay window, and I think the kitchen’s green? That’s your favorite color. It suits you because green is natural and hopeful.

    I couldn’t remember which one. We have different candy in Australia and I get confused about American candy. I can’t practice moderation with peanut M&Ms.

    I remembered it was icecream. It was really sweet how much thought you put in to Thanksgiving, and I’m glad it went well.

    You make awesome creative salads at a deli. You are also a very important voice for foster children and have changed more lives than you’ll ever know. You do that job for free.

    Lots of people have answered this already. Basically, you’re a survivor. You are hurting, but you are a wonderful, caring person. You refuse to allow your pain to hurt any one else person. I like that about you. I think the biggest challenge you face is feeling like you deserve the good things that you give to other people.

    15) Why do I LOVE Wendy’s? Yum!
    They raise money for foster children. Where I live Wendy’s is an icecream place. You only ever see it in shopping malls

    While I understand how hurtful some people can be, privatizing your blog (and deleting your older posts) would be a huge loss to society.

    I was led here by a link from the Dave Thomas Foundation. I read almost half of your posts and all of your tips before they became unavailable. It was because of your blogs that my husband and I decided to open our home to older children and teens. It is because of your blog that we are better foster parents. Our agency and all the CPS workers we have worked with are amazed by how “not the norm” we are as foster parents. This is because of your blog.

    We are young, like just turned 30 young. So the thought of parenting teenagers, born while we were still in high school, is terrifying. The process has been hard for us as we are skipped over for this reason. But we are still determined to help some teens before they age out.

    All of this is because of you, because of your blog, because of your words. I tell case workers and other foster/adopt parents about your blog. For now, they get some helpful tips. How great would it be if they could walk in your shoes through your words?

    I totally get wanting to privatize your blog. And I would subscribe with all those stipulations. But you could reach so many more people and change so many more lives by remaining public and letting the bad apples rot alone. I know it’s easier said than done, but I keep asking myself where we would be now if we didn’t find your blog. I’d like to think we’d still be good parents but you have made us so much more.

      Dear LT, and anyone else who may read this,

      First and foremost, please forgive my ignorance. I myself have endured some hate comments – although these were practically trivial in the light of what you have been through (I come from an unconventional background and I look different from others at my school) – and I know how depressing backlash can become. However, I totally agree with Ali-Y above. It seems that you could cut down on the number of hateful comments by simply disabling comments from the public, or only allowing comments from pre-registered/LT-cleared users. I don’t know whether either of those options are feasible, as I have never used WordPress, but it might be something to look into.
      LT, you are transforming lives. I would have never known anything real about foster kids if it had not been for your blog, and I’m sure others could say the same. I now dream of becoming a foster/adoptive parent to an older child as soon as I am old enough to support myself (I am still in my teens). It would be a tragedy for the impact of your phenomenal writing to be restricted to a privileged few, only because of the unthoughtful behavior of some immature losers.
      Whenever anyone begins a positive, truly worthwhile endeavor, there will always be a vocal minority of rotten people trying to get us to stop, or retreat into the shadows. But we simply can’t let these people get the better of us, because it is only the innocents who will suffer as a result, which is precisely what these people aim for. I try to remember this when the backlash against my own work grows to vicious levels, and the loneliness seems to become insurmountable. But these moments of despair do pass, in their own time, and we come out stronger in the end, ready to confront whatever new obstacles the opposition throws at us.

      I wish you the best, whatever path you decide to undertake. Happy 2013 to you, too!

    I can’t remember this one…probably either no, or to go easy on it. She seemed more of a “no fun allowed” type in regards to junk (read: delicious) food.

    Their adoption foundation + the promotion they run where buying a Frosty/parfait/something else puts money directly into said foundation. I remember your post dealing with this, and I make sure to go crazy with the Frosty intake when they have that. I also buy those Frosty booklets they donate 90% of the revenues for.

    i only recently found your blog. we’re working right now towards becoming foster parents and i just want to thank you for putting so much of your heart and soul out there. i hope you find a MOM LT. you so profoundly deserve one.

    your posts are brave and beautiful and as a (I hope!) soon to be foster mom, you’ve already helped me be better before a kid even lands in our house. thank you for that.

    Hope you keep posting. I find your blog very insightful. Foster kids come from many different backgrounds and go through different experiences. It’s helpful to the foster kids to let them know they aren’t alone or what to expect from the system. It’s helpful for foster parents to give them insight into their foster kids. You’ve inspired me in my own work with ImAFoster.com

    Hello LT. I teach foster PRIDE. Can I share some of your experiences? I’d like to print some TIPS FOR CARING FOR FOSTER CHILDREN on cards and passing them out for people to read out loud during the training. I will have a label made on the back with your website info. Is this okay?

    LT, I hope you’re doing good. We all miss you and we are excited for the news you posted but I’ll be honest, I’m worried you’re okay. Like hoping you’re not hit by another car or something bad like that. It’s been coming up two months since you posted so that’s why I’m worried.

    Where ever you are, I hope you know there are people out in the world who care about you. I hope Moonlight, Shadow, and Harbor are also okay. Thinking about you, LT, and sending you warm thoughts. And if you were okay with it, I’d give you a hug, too.
